The Homefirst Community

Motivated by the belief that everyone deserves a place to call home, we provide temporary and permanent affordable housing in Union County.  Founded in 1986, each year we provide services to approximately 750 adults and children in our temporary shelters, transitional apartments and permanent supportive homes.  Beyond having their immediate needs met, these families become part of the Homefirst Community - a community that lifts them up and provides the structure and support that makes independent living possible.

Interfaith Hospitality Network

Meeting a need for emergency housing, congregations in Union County offer overnight shelter and meals, on a weekly rotation, for homeless women and families with children. The congregation volunteers and our professional staff provide support services in two Interfaith Hospitality Networks each year.

Transitional Housing

Leaving the temporary shelter, some families benefit from longer term case management. Homefirst offers transitional housing and a stable environment to these families for one year. During this year, intensive case management is provided to help the families strengthen their skills and increase their income. Homefirst owns 6 transitional units in 4 locations.

Permanent Supportive Housing

Homefirst purchases and renovates single and multi-family houses and condos to create permanent homes for low-income and homeless individuals and families impacted by HIV/AIDS, domestic violence and other disabilities. Many residents receive long-term rental assistance and case management. In response to the great need for affordable housing, we continue to add housing units each year.

Supportive Services and Programs

Families in the Homefirst community receive training and guidance, gaining skills and resources for independent living. Support services include financial assistance, security deposits and donations of cars. Budget counseling, after-school care programs and peer support groups are part of the educational and recreational programs for children, teens, adults and families.

Our dream is to eliminate homelessness in the county.  We are working towards that goal by providing housing and promoting personal development, independence and self-sufficiency. Homefirst is an integral part of the network of housing, healthcare and social service agencies in the county.
